In January 2018, I joined the group P52 Radness, founded by Adri de la Cruz, to gather artists around the Art of Self Portraiture for a weekly project. Every month she provided inspirations and themes, and members were proactively creative, and displaying such talent each time. I am very honored today to share a loop with some of these artists, and I urge you to go and discover each and every one of them.

I have to admit I did not manage to stick to a weely rythm. But as I reflect on my achievements for 2018, I am proud anyway of the self portraits I created.

I remember about two years ago when I first started photography and joined Instagram a few months later, that’s when I encountered the Art of Self Portraiture for the first time. My first thoughts were to dismiss it completely, thinking you had “to think very highly of yourself” to expose yourself in front of a camera. I thought there was no depth to it. That was before. Later on my path of creativity, I got intrigued and gave it a first try and that’s when the story started for me, early 2016.

2018 was the real journey. The Art of Self Portraiture is a journey. An introspection, where you get to travel within yourself and explore. You explore the many many shades of your mood and character. You let your creativity unravel to become a match to those shades. You seek opportunities, you take pleasure in having dates with yourself in front of the camera.

If I had trouble to stick to themes, it is mainly because I practice the Art of Self Portraiture in a very impulsive manner. I rarely prepare for it. I feel it is the moment and I just do it. I have to have a story to tell, or a technique to try or a challenge to face, as for example : face the camera (my biggest fear), or try lower speed, or freelens, or play with double exposure.

I want my self portraits to be marks of time, for me and my creative journey, as well as for my family and my kids. I want to be in the frame with them both, and individually. I want them to have a proof later that I was there for them. I want to heal that fear that they might forget one day that they have been, that they are loved. That becomes a ritual for them too. We have self portraits when on holidays, and we have our very special one, on Christmas day as a family.

The highlight of last year was to lead a group for The Traveling Dress Collective, with french artists, called “Celle Qui Voyage“. I enjoyed my time with the dress whilst being away in Ireland and it was such a joy ! I have dreamed of being a part of this project for a long time and was so glad to finally make it happen!

So, wrapping up this 2018, I would conclude by admitting my failures for not being there on a weekly basis, but boy I am damn proud of my journey anyway. My challenges for 2019 for the art of self portraiture will be to be even more in the frame, to explore again and again and have fun along the way, and to include my other half in the process!

Well, these are just incredible, Caroline! I especially adore the double exposure of you with the flower and the black and white portrait with your son. Your description of exploring shades of mood and character, and matching creativity, is so perfect and describes how I have felt about our P52 project in 2018. I didn’t make quite so many images with my children, but taking individual pictures have become just as important. Thank you.

        I love these, Caroline!!

These are timeless images, Caroline. I’m so excited to see more of your work this year. <3

Caroline!!!! “I want my portraits to be marks of time”! Yessss. Seriously, the mood and tone of your portraits hit me hard and resonate so much with me. I adore you and being on this journey with you!!
